Adam Lambert’s Stunning “Believe” Performance Leaves Cher Emotionally Overwhelmed

Adam Lambert, known from American Idol and currently serving as the frontman for Queen, delivered a performance of Cher’s legendary 1998 song “Believe” at the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2019, moving the iconic pop star to tears. The prestigious awards event, held on December 26, 2018, was broadcast from the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C., USA. This ceremony recognizes individuals for their lifetime achievements in the arts. Lambert’s performance was a tribute to Cher, who was one of the honorees.

Lambert’s rendition of “Believe” was deeply emotional and ballad-style, significantly differing from the original’s lively and energetic vibe. As Lambert performed, the camera captured Cher visibly moved, shedding tears during his singing. Three weeks following the performance, Cher remained touched by the tribute, expressing on Twitter that it was “BEYOND COMPREHENSION.”

Cher wasn’t the only artist taken by surprise at the Kennedy Center Honors. Rock icon Cyndi Lauper, who had earlier informed Cher that she was out of town, astonished her by performing “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Lauper and Lambert concluded the event with a duet of “I Got You Babe.”

In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, Lambert shared his thoughts on his memorable performance of “Believe.” He mentioned feeling extremely nervous beforehand, with his heart racing. Nevertheless, he expressed it was a privilege to perform a song by one of the greatest singers ever. Lambert had been a fan of Cher’s music since his high school graduation, and her 1998 album, “Believe,” ranked among his favorites.

Lambert’s performance at the Kennedy Center Honors wasn’t his first tribute to a music legend that amazed audiences. In 2016, Lambert showcased his remarkable vocals in a homage to George Michael on the TV show “Greatest Hits.” He delivered another outstanding performance, this time of the 1987 hit “Faith.” Fans were highly impressed with both renditions, earning Lambert the reputation of being one of the finest vocalists of his generation.

The Kennedy Center Honors is one of the highest accolades an American performer can attain. The award ceremony, now in its 44th year, recognizes individuals for their lifetime contributions to the arts. Other honorees at the 2018 event included country music star Reba McEntire, jazz composer Wayne Shorter, Philip Glass, and Lin-Manuel Miranda along with the team from Hamilton.
