50 years later, Archie Bunker’s defense of the National Anthem is gaining viral attention.

Archie Bunker was undoubtedly a memorable TV character. He starred for years on “All in the Family” and connected with millions of Americans who related to his views on being a patriot.

The show portrayed Bunker as a hard-working American who had previously served in the military, explaining why he wouldn’t stand by as another man belittled the Star-Spangled Banner and disrespected what it symbolized.

While some of his remarks haven’t aged well, considering the “woke” movement sweeping the U.S. today, Bunker’s defense of the national anthem still resonates with millions of Americans who continue to place their pride in the country above all. In this scene, Bunker is watching TV with his son-in-law, Meathead.

As the national anthem plays before a sports event, Meathead criticizes the anthem, claiming it’s not a great song because it glorifies the horrors of war. Modern critics argue that the anthem is racist toward Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, but Meathead opposed it due to its origin during the War of 1812 between the young United States and Great Britain.

While Meathead voiced his complaints, Archie Bunker immediately jumped to defend the anthem. “That’s one terrible song,” Meathead says, prompting a stunned reaction from Bunker, who makes sure to let his son-in-law know how wrong he is.
